For Justin Warfield, remixing the new Depeche Mode single “Heaven” was truly a labor of love. “I love that band so much, no matter how much I hear the records they’ve almost become standards to me, and I never get sick of them,” says Warfield, the voice of post-punk revivalists She Want Revenge. “No matter how many times I saw them on the road when SWR opened up [2006], every night was a pleasure …. like going to the best concert ever, going to rock school and hanging out with the elder statesmen of rock and roll. Amazing.” Warfield’s studio massage of the track from the new Depeche Mode album “Delta Machine,” though, was tricky, since he wanted to make it dancier. “I knew it would be a challenge simply based on the BPM, so after I got the basic beat going I dove into a library of some old Drumulator, Synclavier and Fairlight stuff I had because it felt like it wanted some of those classic, throw-back-y sounds that we automatically associate with early DM – not enough to make it kitsch, but enough to add a flavor,” he says. Presto, a remix he, the guys from Depeche Mode and, the early comments indicate, fans love. As for Warfield, he recently contributed the song “Headlights” to “Sons of Anarchy,” and, with She Wants Revenge on haitus, he’s been producing new music for emerging singer-rapper Nova Rockafeller, doing remixes for Jason Derulo, Childish Gambino and Kimbra, working on the forthcoming solo effort from Kill Hannah’s Mat Devine and even working on music for a mixtape from basketball bruiser Metta World Peace. Oh, we generally liked his take on Coachella whiners too.
