Ears Wide Open: Sami

The ghost of Patsy Cline [Tuesday marks the 50th anniversary of her tragic death, by the way] is either smiling or rolling her eyes at this one, we can’t figure which. This version of the Willie Nelson-penned “Crazy,” which Cline made a hit, comes courtesy of new arrived Sami, the nom de tune of Samantha Freeman. In between her studies and world travels, the Hermosa Beach-bred, UCLA-educated singer has been working on her debut EP with the producer Troublemaker (aka Josh Kouzomis, who will release it on his label Hollyrock). Contextually, her take on “Crazy” makes sense when you learn that Sami did post-graduate work in Vancouver, B.C., studying music therapy and volunteering at a home for schizophrenic and bipolar as the principle music therapist. Between director Jeff Vash’s video and the song’s haunting production, “Crazy” is a dark place.
