If you fell in love with Fitz & the Tantrums in 2009 for their retro charm, your heart might ache a little bit over the L.A. outfit’s new single “Out of My League.” As frontman Michael Sean Fitzpatrick indicated in the interview we published last week, the band’s new music fast-forwards to the 1980s on their new album “More Than Just a Dream” (out May 7 on Elektra). If the whoosh of Tony Hoffer’s production doesn’t blow your hair back, then the falsetto ooh-ing could make it fly. Maybe Noelle Scaggs’ vocals or James King’s sax will be more prominent on other songs, but they are missed (or buried) on this made-for-radio number. Fitz gets points for not repeating himself, but isn’t there a preponderance of pop songs like this right now? Color us torn.

Sounds desperate for attention and cheesier than all
the other 80s throwback garbage that came out last year. At least youngblood hawke have a good chorus and are half my age. Fitz probably think they made a record for the kids with this one, truth is my daughter just had me turn it off. I feel sad for the dude with the Pepe Le Pew haircut, at least with the retro tunes there was a sense of nostalgia I could connect with. Another one bites the dust.
I like the song. I’ve seen Fitz many times and fell in love with their ep. Bands need to progress and try things out. Changing is part of the artistc process. Just look at the greats. The song is very catchy and still gives me that nostalgic feeling which is what I love about FATT. If we let our expectations go and just listen as fresh listener you might feel differently. I’m excited to hear more and of course see them live.
lacking substance and pretty cheesy I have to agree. Hope the rest of the album has more to say
their first album was so great! did they really take this long to copy Fun? scaggs is the band’s differentiator and hopefully she proves it in other tracks
