It’s been more than two years since Jake Bellows departed Omaha for L.A., and that solo album he mentioned was in the works back in 2011 is finally taking shape. Bellows fronted the indie-rock band Neva Dinova for three albums between 2002 and ’08 and collaborated with Conor Oberst on an EP (re-released in 2010 and highly recommended), penning woozy anthems that straddled the line between heart-rending Americana and dreamy shoegazing. Now he’s releasing a tape titled “Help” via Majestic Litter (the A-side is available digitally). Recorded in Nebraska with some very familiar co-conspirators (Ryan Fox of the Good Life, Todd Fink of the Faint, Ben Brodin of ARC Studios and Neva Dinova’s Heath Koontz), Bellows’ new songs feel as comfortable as an old sweatshirt – warm, inviting and inspiring a bit of nostalgia for the times things were maybe a little louder and seemingly less complicated. The storytelling quality in Bellows’ voice makes us yearn for the full album, which he says will come later this year.
