The opener of 2014’s Chinatown Summer Nights series could hardly have been a more euphoric affair. How so? Well, where do you start?

EFG (Electric Flower Group) gave a scintillating display of virtuoso psych-rock. Meiko charmed fans with her disarming pop songs and inspired a line at the merch table that stretched halfway to Echo Park. Pop quintet Babes [top photo] won the crowd with their playfully lascivious set, dispensing merch that included red underwear and lip balm. (We could not make this up.) Kera & the Lesbians provided a spirited nightcap of edgy folk-rock. Indie quartet StaG wowed early arrivals with a set of heady rock. And honey-voiced RÁJ proved transcendent with his yearning songs in the waning daylight.

Chinatown Summer Nights returns on July 12 with Madi Diaz, Eastern Conference Champions, Afternoons, Francisco the Man, Black Apples and Wet & Reckless. The music starts at 6 p.m.
