Download: Two Gallants, ‘Broken Eyes’

1

In the five years between Two Gallants albums, we’ve followed and admired singer-guitarist Adam Stephens’ solo adventures and checked out singer-drummer Tyson Vogel’s work in Devotionals. Each good, but the duo have reunited to make “The Bloom and the Blight” (due Sept. 4 on ATO Records), their fourth album and one on par with their most visceral, literate albums. Their aesthetic is folk-rock with dialed to the extremes – a melodic and rhythmic fury (and, alternately, tenderness) matched by Stephens’ lyrical bloodletting. “The Bloom and the Blight” reminds you of the best moments from their first three records (two for Saddle Creek). Did the time away yield even more depth for Two Gallants? It sounds like it.
