After a decade away, experimental electronic duo GANGI return with new recordings from their “digital dust.” The three-song EP, “As Fake Estates,” will be out Aug. 5. It also introduces their new moniker, Fake Estates, which they will use for future releases.
‣ Garbage headlines the Palladium behind their new album “Not Your Kind of People,” with Screaming Females opening. ‣ The Shins visit the Gibson Amphitheatre of their acclaimed new album “Port of Morrow,” and joining them on this tour is Washed Out, the woozy electronic band fronted by Ernest Greene whose own new album “Within […]
First up, for October (or, where did my September go, I seem to have misplaced it?): ‣ A year ago last week, the Lumineers did a date at the Hotel Cafe. Twelve months and a load of album sales later, the Denver-based folkies are doing a two-night stand at the Fonda Theatre, with both shows […]
Gangi’s “Railways no. 1-27” is one of those sound collages that threatens go off the tracks and at any minute but never quite does. The spacey, sample-added excursion is the lead track on the L.A. duo’s sophomore album “Gesture Is,” which will finally be released on Oct. 2. We say “finally” because it’s taken Matt […]
April departs with a busy Monday: ‣ Remember when guitar bands had platinum records? Eve 6 does. The L.A. pop-punk trio was selling records in droves before they were old enough to drink, but in 2004 after a platinum album (1998’s “Eve 6”), a gold record (2000’s “Horrorscope”) and a disappointing third album (2003’s “It’s […]
Nine SoCal bands are playing Buzz Bands LA’s “Dear Austin: Love, L.A.” day party next Wednesday on the first day of the South by Southwest Music Festival. It seems like 999 SoCal bands are actually headed to Austin. When we started culling music from those artists, our uploader begged for for mercy. So we called […]
Since he released his trippy debut album “A” in 2008, Matt Gangi – who does business as Gangi – has been painstakingly working on the next step. Did I say “painstakingly?” I meant .. agonizingly … slow. It’s OK, though. Gangi, who has a new collaborator in Eric Chramosta (replacing Lyle Nesse), has now put […]
Thursday things: ‣ Part 1 of FMLY Fest – two days of music and communing thrown by the L.A. branch of the eco-conscious collective – goes off at Catnap (1726 N. Spring St. in Chinatown). We posted on the preview mixtape earlier this month. And there’s a very good lineup today, featuring Gangi, Gothic Tropic, […]
The DIY crew at FMLY – although the socially conscious group prefers to think of itself as DIT (“do-it-together”) – has big plans to close out 2011. The organization that has become known for, among other things, its group bike rides that feature pop-up concerts, is closing out the year with the two-day FMLY FEST, […]
