On her first two singles as Spelles, Kathryn Barr proved she could be both fast-moving (the percussive “Bird in a Cage”) and deeply brooding (the melancholy “Out of the Canyon”). The L.A.-based Canadian goes deeper on her new single “Rib Cage,” questioning her very worth with those smoky vocals made for late-night introspection. “I try my best to be brave / but they smell fear from a mile away,” she sings on the track produced, as her recent material has been, by Bill Lefler. Of the song, she says: “‘Rib Cage’ was my reaction to a moment where for the first time I felt like my best wasn’t good enough. I started writing it on just the A string on my guitar, and it felt really primal and spooky.” And rather captivating. Spelles has more music on the way later this year.
