If you were present — and in the spirit — for any of the first three weeks of Freedom Fry’s May residency at the Echo, you’re on the indie-poppers new single “21.” The band is built around the husband-wife collaboration of Bruce Driscoll and Marie Seyrat, and as Driscoll explained at the shows, “It gets pretty lonely in the studio when we record because it’s just the two of us.” So with recording devices in place, he invited the crowd to help with the song-in-progress — the first night Freedom Fry recorded the crowd’s handclaps, the second the background vocals and the third the scream you hear at 2:32. The finished product is typical of the most exuberant moments Freedom Fry has displayed over the course of two EPs and seven-plus singles. Can we get a whoa-oh-oh?
