Big start to the long weekend:

► Bay Area quintet Ceremony was known for making fast-paced hardcore punk rock, but their new album “The L-Shaped Man,” their first in three years, sounds more like rock-solid post-punk. See their double video for “The Separation” and “The Understanding” above. They play the Echoplex tonight along with Negative Approach, Gun Outfit and Mrs. Magician.
► Seattle rapper Grieves and his Rhymesayers labelmates Grayskul visit the El Rel Theatre, with L.A.’s Nocando joining in.
► Prog rockers the Dear Hunter play the Troubadour, supported by Northern Faces and Naïve Thieves.
Isaac Rother & the Phantoms celebrate the release of their new album “The Unspeakable Horror Of …” with a show at El Cid, supported by Zig Zags and Black Mambas.
► On the local festival beat, the Simi Valley Cajun & Blues Festival kicks off, with Big Bad Voodoo Dadday, Canned Heat, the Magnolia Sisters and more at Rancho Santa Susanna Community Park. Set times here.
► And Topanga Days brings the Stone Foxes, Jesus Sons and more to the Topanga Community House (1440 Topanga Canyon Blvd.). Set times here.
