Yumi Zouma is another one of those bands that came together without actually coming together until it was time to perform and tour with acts like Lorde. Charlie Ryder and Josh Burgess (who now work in NY) met up with fellow Kiwi Kim Pflaum (and some ideas for songs) via Dropbox for the most part. However, their music as Yumi Zouma (along with their soft ’80s artwork featuring a girl with perfectly feathered hair) sounds anything but sterile. It’s dream-pop meets chillwave with Plfaum’s hushed vocals draping synth beats that seem to roll like the waves to a young child standing in front of the ocean for the first time. Songs like “The Brae” quickly turned fans’ of Tennis and Real Estate to their EP, which opened with “A Long Walk Home From Parted Lovers” – a track that could easily been mistaken for a Toro Y Moi song if Chaz Bundick happened to sound more feminine. Their latest single “Alena” bounces a little more alongside Classixx and RAC but still has that delicate touch to call their own. Yumi Zouma’s self-titled EP is out now via Cascine.
