Seventy-eight-year-old Lee “Scratch” Perry and his band Subatomic Soundsystem brought the party to the Santa Monica Pier on Thursday night for eighth installment of this year’s Twilight Concert Series. Bedecked in his characteristic colorful jacket, hat and baubles, the reggae legend regaled a crowd obviously intent on starting its holiday weekend early. Opening the evening were L.A. Afrobeat stalwarts Mexico 68. There’s two more weeks in the annual free concert series in Santa Monica – OK Go and Allah-Las on Sept. 3 and Charles Bradley and King James & the Special Men on Sept. 10.

Anyone else hear his “freestyle” during Roast Fish and Cornbread?
Got fairly racy…and when I say racy I mean what he was freestyling had to do with race – specifically the white race.
