The Rentals have “returned” several times now – irreverently so, of course, with their debut album back in 1995 that proffered “Friends of P” as an instant power-pop classic. But none of their returns, including the late-’90s reunion for second album for second album “Seven More Minutes” and sporadic mid- and late-Aughts projects, feels as welcome as “Lost in Alphaville,” their first new full-length in 15 years. Rentals founder Matt Sharp (Weezer’s original bassist) is joined on the album by Ryen Sleger of Ozma, Patrick Carney of the Black Keys, Jess Wolfe and Holly Laessig of Lucius, and Lauren Chipman of the Section Quartet, with Sharp producing and Dave Sardy mixing. The first two singles are giddy, subversive fun – each a perfect Dagwood of buzzing guitar, oozing Moog, torso-crushing bass and drums and saccharine boy-girl vocals. Many try to make musical Sweet Tarts this tasty, few succeed.  “Lost in Alphaville” will be out Aug. 26 via Polyvinyl Records.
