Coachella 2014: Bo Ningen, a thrill a minute

Who: Bo Ningen at the Gobi Tent
In 3 or Fewer Words: Strange psych saturnalia
Memorable Because: The Tokyo-originating, London-based Bo Ningen kicked off Sunday with a psychedelic circus of sound, delighting onlookers who never seemed to recover from disbelief. Dressed in drag, slogging around stage like scarecrow models in a Tim Burton stop-motion gone haywire, the four Nihongo weirdos of Bo Ningen played possessed: muscular, jagged, improvised distortion and swirls of guitar texture that dizzied to the point of delirium. This was the kind of thrilling curio that bands like Smashing Pumpkins and Sonic Youth used to pluck from obscurity for a handful of tour dates. Sugoi!
What I’d Tell My Friend Who Was At Denny’s: While you were choking down breakfast to heal a hangover, Bo Ningen hit a grand slam.
