Following the demise of Chicago band Kids These Days earlier this year, on the heels of SXSW and Coachella performances and the release of their debut, Jeff Tweedy-produced album “Traphouse Rock,” Vic Mensa is stepping out on his own. The 20-year-old MC is a part of the Chicago hip-hop crew SaveMoney, also including Chance the Rapper, Caleb James, and Thelonious Martin; and he’s just released his debut mixtape “Innanetape” (a garbled combination of ”˜internet’ and ”˜mixtape’). It features appearances by Chance, Ab-Soul, Thundercat, BJ The Chicago Kid, Rockie Fresh and Eliza Doolittle, as well as production from “channel ORANGE” producer Om’Mas Keith, Hit-Boy, Cam Osteen and Peter Cottontale. On the Rockie Fresh-guested, Boi-1da-produced “Time Is Money,” Mensa flows, “They say the darkest night comes before the brightest morning / I like to think I’d ask the right things if God was right before me / Like, why you let babies get shot while babies is killin’? / All because the system that raised me from grade school made me the villain.” In the midst of a small east coast jaunt with J. Cole and Wale now, Mensa is set to tour with Disclosure and Samo Sound Boy for a string of North American dates in January and February of next year.
