Ears Wide Open: The Pocket Rockets

“Somewhere We Can Be Alone,” the jaunty new single from the Pocket Rockets, seems happy marriage of the East L.A. trio’s raw, post-punk past and a possibly explosive future. Lifelong pals Chris Magallon, Ralph Blanco and Lyndon Miller sounded like dissonance-dwelling toughs on their “Golden Gloves 1902” EP, released in late 2011 on Sonata Contata Records (the imprint manned by Eve 6’s Jon Siebels). That urgency is still present in the new tune, with its squalid guitars and pugilistic backbeat. But it’s the detached but catchy chorus that wins here – with a line like that, how could any guy go wrong?
