Ears Wide Open: The Bolts

As long as there is modern rock radio, there will be bands who seem to exist for the expressed purpose of making it there. That’s not to disparage Orange County-bred quintet the Bolts, who dispense full-throttle rock ’n’ roll better than most, especially for their young age. There’s no indie navel-gazing here, just three brothers – Adam, Heath and Austin Farmer, joined by Matt Champagne and Ryan Kilpatrick – trying to connect the dots between rock’s past and present. The quintet’s four-vocalist harmonic is distinctive for the kind of rock they’re doing, and those harmonies, with their tight guitar-keys-bass-drums, have been enough to put the Bolts a cut above in local battle-of-the-bands frays. They look almost too boy-band to wield a scruffy single like “Walk Away” (from their “Fall 2012” EP, out next week), but good looks, like good licks, never hurt your chances on the FM dial.
