Video: Family of the Year, ‘St. Croix’

L.A.’s Family of the Year never seemed comfortable with staying inside the lines that separated the genres of folk, pop and electronica. But within that rebellious songwriting, hooks have never been a problem for the band whether they came forward with raw, harmony-laden ballads such as “Summer Girl” or explored Euro-disco soundscapes with jams such as “Psyche or Like Scope.” However, their charm has recently been filtered leaving only squeaky clean, high spirits for fans to consume on the new EP. It’s hard to believe this quartet was the same band who gave us the earnest and lush tunes from 2009’s “Songbook,” but perhaps you’ll cringe less upon hearing the rhyme scheme in “St. Croix” when it’s paired up with its new Jessica Sanders-directed music video. The clip’s sunny treatment, which mirrors “Beach Party” and the Beach Boys film “I Get Around,” will be sure to make you chuckle at the least when they literally bust out the love potion (which is given out at the ocean…) for a romantic afternoon.
