People will most likely recognize her from a role on the TV show “Boardwalk Empire,” but L.A. music fans may recognize Aleksa Palladino from her time spent playing local venues with her husband Devon Church as Exitmusic. Back in 2008, they were promoting a collection of songs titled “The Decline of the West.” Since moving back to New York City in 2009, the duo is now getting ready to release “From Silence,” their first EP via Secretly Canadian. Exitmusic’s sound still embodies pop noir, with stunningly haunting vocals and rhythms that flourish within a duality of beauty and spookiness. However, the slow burns in new songs such as “The Sea” ache with romantic hysteria as their deep bass lines are swept into mixes of electronic swirls by Nicholas Shelestak and heavy drumming by Dru Prentiss. Although the band now performs as a four-piece, the forthcoming EP centers on Palladino and Church’s relationship as husband and wife. That bond lends a certain sweetness to their sound, but there’s also a darkness that hovers over melodies that beautifully parallel the human connection.
