As we indicated back in June, melancholic popgazers Mezzanine Owls are not going quietly into the night. The fractured L.A. quartet, dormant almost three years now, is releasing a couple of archival recordings (made in August 2008) from bassist Dan Horne’s Lone Palm Studio – “Obstacles” and “Tethered to a Fountain” – as a limited-edition 7-inch. The A-side finds Jonathan Zeitlin’s guitar textures and Jack Burnside’s lyrics equally evocative, qualities that set MezzOwls apart ever since their 2006 debut “Slingshot Echoes.” With Zeitlin and drummer Pauline Mu now making music as Alpine Decline (and doing so in China), who knows whether they will ever be together as a four-piece again. If not, this is a nice parting gift.
