Video: MEN, ‘Off Our Backs’

After touring for nearly three years, MEN finally released their debut album in North America this week. Although MEN’s material doesn’t stray too far from the radical political-pop and post-punk stylings of JD Samson’s work with Le Tigre, disco and even reggae elements shimmer a bit more on “Talk About Body.” Of course, the fun dance music from a group that calls itself both a band and an “art/performance collective” will blur some lines when it comes to pairing visuals with lyrics. Directed by Bryce Kass, the clip for the track “Off Our Backs” mirrors the upbeat singsong chorus with some skin, some grinding, and a somewhat significant tug-of-war game to complete the world of contradictions – a place Samson and company gladly and frequently invite others to join.

||| Live: MEN celebrate the release with several L.A. appearances: They do two in-store performances tonight (Amoeba at 6:30 p.m., Ooga Booga in Chinatown at 9:30 p.m.), then end the evening with DJ set at Bardot at midnight. On Thursday, they do another in-store at the new Fingerprints location in Long Beach.
