New bits: Red Cortez, Voxhaul Broadcast, Eastern Conference Champions, the Satellite

Red Cortez is throwing everything it has at this month’s residency at the Satellite. Well, not everything, because Red Cortez has a wealth of music, the best of which will emerge on the L.A. quartet’s debut album later this year. But some of the rest of the songs will be released in the form of free EPs, one per week for each week of the residency. The music, some new songs or alternate versions and some tunes dating back to when the foursome was known as the Weather Underground, will be issued digitally on the band’s website, and on CDs at the shows. It’s a been a long wait for an album from Red Cortez; Harley Prechtel-Cortez and band emerged in late 2007, and a string of EPs, a tour with Morrissey, a name change and hundreds of shows later, they figure to arrive in 2011. The residency will feature support from the likes of Everest, Richard Swift and Eastern Conference Champions.
Overdue albums, II: Voxhaul Broadcast’s “Timing Is Everything” is coming out March 22. The L.A. quartet recently did a great Daytrotter session. They’re at the Troubadour on March 3.
Overdue albums, III: Eastern Conference Champions’ “Speak-Ahh” will be released April 26.
Venue update: Something is happening at Cinespace that is probably very important in the Dim Mak world and to those who understand what a “pop-up bar” is. The LA Weekly details.
Venue update II: Rest in peace, the Gypsy Lounge. One of the few places for live music in south O.C. is gone.
Venue update III: The Stone Bar (5221 W. Hollywood Blvd.) in East Hollywood is remade as the Harvard & Stone Bar. Live music?
Venue update IV: Beginning tonight, the Satellite (still being called Spaceland by plenty of folks) kicks off a late-night “happy hour” – half-priced well drinks and draft beers, and free admission after midnight (no matter whether a band is still playing).
