First there was this L.A. Times story on how Echo Park has changed. Because it has, y’know, and if you live in Manhattan Beach and only skirt Echo Park to go to Dodger games, you might not know that. Then there was this response on the LA Weekly blog, which made for lively reading. Now there is Rachel Glassberg’s little tome to gentrifying, spotted on the Eastsider LA blog. Surely there must be plans in the works for a Gap.
Amen, I HATE it when my neighborhood gets clean and safe – who doesn’t? And oh – how about when stores that actually MAKE MONEY come into a neighborhood and help the LOCAL ECONOMY … just the worst!!
In the end, a cheap neighborhood should be there for minorities only – white people who also have a small budget (such as musicians / artists) are not allowed to move into neighborhoods with cheap rent, because it would then gentrify the neighborhood. What is the solution for those poor white artists, then? It’s obvious – just don’t be poor anymore! Duh!
