Anybody feeling sentimental for the big, hooky guitars we loved so much in the ’90s should look out for “Sugar,” the new album (out this week) from Dead Confederate. After touring both nationally and overseas with Dinosaur Jr., the Athens, Ga.-based quintet hooked up with producer John Agnello (Dinosaur Jr., Sonic Youth, the Hold Steady) and got J. Mascis himself to add grungy guitars to one of the tracks. ”¬The influence is palpable, with “Sugar” having less of a gritty psychedelic flavor than the band’s national debut, “Wrecking Ball,” but retaining the big guitar, walloping drums and raucous melodies. Lead guitarist Hardy Morris trades off on songwriting duties with bassist Brantley Senn this time around, adding a new personality to the voice of the songs as well.

I’d really like to see more reggae/dancehall since that’s where DJ music truly began. Throw some sound clash in there. A little U-Roy, maybe Runaway Girl (live). That’s what’s up
Never heard of this band, but I love the song.
