Coachella: Coheed and Cambria, at sunset

Coheed

Who: Coheed and Cambria on the Main Stage.
In 3 or Fewer Words: Space metal sunset
I’ll Remember This Until the Next Halftime Show I See Because: Coheed and Cambria was right for the Saturday “sunset slot” on the main stage? Their conceptual prog space opera appeals almost exclusively to devoted fans (You see, the son of Coheed and Cambria is pitted against Supreme Tri-Mage Wilhelm Ryan, and joins with The Prize and IRO the robot to ”“ oh, nevermind.) And the band’s metal influences don’t lend themselves to the Coachella body politic. Doubters be vanquished, Coheed and Cambria validated their assignment, delivering a robust and raging performance packed with memories: The stage roof caught fire. An 8-year-old girl perched on daddy’s shoulders and gave the devil horns during “The Camper Velourium III: Al the Killer.” As the sun winked its eye, singer-guitarist Claudio Sanchez broke hearts with the moving ballad “Pearl of the Stars.” And then for the closer, the USC marching band joined C&C on stage for a monstrous rendition of “Welcome Home.” Silly? Maybe just a little. But it was just so … epic, man. (Translation: one of the best of the fest.)
What I’d Tell My Friend Who Was at The XX: My band can beat-up your band.
